Introducing a few new characters and a new story point for the ‘verse that Cora and Maggie exist in. Meet Kit, Edana, Shana, and Elowyn.

In the mountains of northern Marvadel, high above the hills, plains, and cities, the clang of clashing swords rang through the sky, only to be drowned out by thunderous roars that rumbled through the stones, down to the dense forests below. At the base of the mountain range, those that dwelled in the mining camps looked to the skies, hoping to catch a glimpse of what could be the cause of the mountain tremors—the same tremors preventing them from entering the mines—but the most they could see was the occasional cloud of smoke from above the mountaintops.

It happened at the beginning of every season. As much as the workers appreciated the forced day off from the mines, they were not as grateful for the occasional collapsed tunnel the mysterious sounds caused. As they milled about the camp, most of the workers drank and sang to pass the hours. Some, however, had gathered around one of the cook fires to eat and trade theories on what could be happening on the other side of the mountains.

“I’ve said it before,” an old woman said as she sat down on a makeshift bench made from a log that had been sawed in half, “The gods have seen us pryin’ into the earth to get at their gems.” The chain that ran between the manacles attached to her thin wrists jangled as she lifted her bowl to her lips and sipped the hot soup. She finished with a loud slurp and lowered the wooden bowl down to her knees. “We keep diggin’ around here, we’re bound to bring their wrath down on our heads,” she added in a raised voice just as one of the guards passed by.

The guard knocked his closed fist against the side of her head and said, “Stuff it, ya old bat. Ain’t any gods ‘round here that give a damn ‘bout some low-life criminals.”
